Apple is expected to launch its second-generation AirTag around mid-2025, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He adds that the successor’s design will remain largely unchanged, but will bring three notable improvements: better range, an upgraded wireless chip, and enhanced privacy features.
Gurman says the next-gen AirTag, codenamed B589, has reportedly progressed through manufacturing tests, indicating its readiness for market release. The improved range and wireless chip are practical enhancements that were likely expected. However, the focus on privacy upgrades highlights Apple’s response to growing concerns about the misuse of AirTags.
Since their debut, AirTags have been linked to incidents of stalking, with some users even modifying the devices to disable their speakers. These incidents have spurred calls for Apple to implement stronger safeguards against such misuse.
Gurman suggests that Apple will take steps to make it harder to disable the internal speaker on the next-generation AirTag. As always, whether or not the details provided are accurate remains to be seen, though it should be noted that the Bloomberg writer has been keeping a good track record when it comes to leaks surrounding the tech giant.
