With tech advancing everyday, so is cybercrime following hot on its heels. To help keep up with the more sophisticated forms of cybercrime, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has announced the formation of a new unit under the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID). It’s known as the Technical and Tactical Cyber Unit.
Bernama cites Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Razarudin Husain as saying “this initiative will strengthen PDRM’s capacity to address cyber threats with greater effectiveness”. Razarudin noted that the commercial crimes are becoming more complex, especially with the use of AI, and specifically deep fake tech making scams more convincing. “This progress requires us to adopt more proactive and innovative measures to prevent the exploitation of technology, particularly in online fraud”, he added.
According to the report, 17 positions within the unit have been filled as part of the unit’s first-phase operations. Though no new positions were allocated for the team, with PDRM relying on internal resources to reorganise the CCID in the formation of the unit.
The formation of the unit follows a prior announcement from back in March, during the celebration of the 217th Police Day. At the time, the IGP had said that “PDRM needs to prepare the department with assets and equipment in line with the advancement of modern policing technology”.
