Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that the Malaysian government will improve laws and regulations surrounding data protection. He also highlighted the importance of boosting both the AI and data centre ecosystems. This was following a meeting with Google’s global head of government affairs and public policy Karan Bhatia, at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2024 Summit.
According to The Star, Anwar noted earlier that artificial intelligence is considered crucial for digital transformation in this rapidly developing economy. He also noted that Malaysia is capable of bringing in significant investments in the field, with the government’s acknowledgement of the importance of bridging the digital divide for a fair development in an AI-driven world.
Astro Awani quotes Anwar as saying that he “shared Malaysia’s aspirations on trade and investment matters, as well as inviting them to invest in our country”. This is following a luncheon with business leaders also in attendance of the APEC 2024 Summit.
Previously, the Ministry of Human Resources cited a Talentcorp report that estimated that 600,000 workers from 10 key industries may have their jobs taken over by artificial intelligence. But on the flip side, there could be up to 60 new jobs that will emerge for the impacted to transition to in the next three to five years.
