Following Singapore’s implementation, Malaysia has been pilot testing three apps for our own QR code-based immigration clearance system. Originally scheduled to end by 30 September, the trial has since been extended to 30 November instead. With the deadline approaching, the Home Ministry (KDN) has said that one of these proof-of-concept (POC) apps has been selected, with an announcement coming soon.
The Star cites Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail as saying that “KDN has finalised one of the three vendors that we trialled under the POC. We submitted our recommendation to the Finance Ministry last week for approval”. The report also noted that the trials showed that the QR code immigration app effectively reduced wait times. An announcement for the chosen app will be made soon, though no mention of a specific date.
In case you missed it, three apps were being tested for the QR code immigration implementation. One is MyTrip, used for those going through Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB). Those going through the Sultan Iskandar building (BSI) will use MyRentas instead. Finally, motorcyclists have their own MyBorderPass.
According to the report, when the QR app gets announced, those who will benefit first would be those travelling via bus or mortorcycle, at both BSI and KSAB. This is because data analysis shows that these make up nearly 80% of daily cross-border traffic, with private and commercial vehicles taking up the remaining 20%. Use of the app will later be expanded to all 141 entry points in Malaysia.
