British newspaper The Guardian has announced that it will no longer be posting through its official accounts on X, formerly known as Twitter. The publication states that it has concluded the benefits of using the platform are now outweighed by the negatives, and that the company had been considering leaving for a while.
The main reason for its departure seems to be because it considers X now being a “toxic” social media platform rife with conspiracy theories and racism. Following the US presidential election, The Guardian also cites X owner Elon Musk, who it says uses the platform’s influence to “shape political discourse”.
While it will no longer be posting on the site, the publication explains that it will still occasionally embed content from X into its articles and that the platform’s users can still share the newspaper’s articles. Additionally, its reporters will continue using X for news-gathering purposes, as well as other social media sites that it does not officially engage with.
The Guardian added that it is able to make this decision because X now plays a diminished role in promoting its work. Last year, notable US broadcasters NPR and PBS also left X after the network labeled their accounts as “state-affiliated media”.
