Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has confirmed that an Xbox handheld gaming console is in development. Speaking to Bloomberg, Spencer acknowledged the growing demand for portable gaming and said the company is exploring possibilities in the sector. However, fans shouldn’t expect to see a handheld device from Microsoft anytime soon, as the project is still in its early stages.
Spencer revealed that Microsoft has started prototyping its first handheld gaming system and is considering a broader strategy for entering the portable market. He emphasised the importance of creating not just a device but a comprehensive vision that could set Microsoft apart. “I think our team could do some real innovative work, but we want to be informed by learning and what’s happening now,” Spencer stated, hinting at a long-term approach.
Despite ongoing development, Spencer reiterated that the release of Microsoft’s handheld console is still several years away. For now, the company is focused on refining its concepts and gathering insights before committing to a final design. Earlier this month, Windows Central’s Jez Corden, via the Xbox Two podcast, suggests that a potential unveiling or teaser could potentially happen sometime in 2025.
In the meantime, Spencer says Microsoft is aiming to improve the Xbox app experience on existing handheld devices. He added that the current version of the app is “good rather than great” and sees enhancing its performance as a priority.
