The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the only variant of the family that did not make its way to our shores, and looking at its US price, it may be for good reason. As you’d expect, part of this is because of the folding screen, and you’ll probably be forgiven if you expect it to be the single most expensive component. But more recently, we find just exactly what that cost is, and it’s enough to not just buy another phone, but a laptop.
US repair company iFixit, famous for its teardown and repairability ratings and the selling of repair parts themselves, has listed the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s inner screen on its website. And it costs a whopping US$1,199.99 (~RM5,338), or US$1,206.99 (~RM5,369) if you also want the necessary tools to do the repair yourself.
For context, the ordinary Google Pixel 9 Pro has a starting price of RM5,199 for its comparatively uncommon 128GB storage configuration. As The Verge points out, the screen for the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a larger price tag than the 13-inch M3 MacBook Air. This applies to the local market as well, with the starting configuration being priced locally at RM4,999.
To be fair, it’s not necessarily a thing that only applies to the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. While iFixit doesn’t have any other foldables’ inner screen listed on its website, its cost probably wouldn’t be that far off what is listed for the Google foldable.
