LG Display unveiled its latest stretchable screen technology last week at the LG Science Park in Seoul. The 12-inch prototype was demonstrated to be stretchable up to 18 inches, 50% of its original length – a record-breaking achievement in the display industry.
The unit shown is an evolution of its predecessor that was unveiled by LG Display back in 2022, which had a maximum elongation rate of 20%. On top of delivering more than double the stretchability, the new prototype also boasts a resolution of 100ppi and full RGB colour.
The display uses a micro-LED light source smaller than 40 micrometres, silicon substrate that’s akin to that used in contact lenses, and a novel wiring structure. LG says these improvements allow the panel to withstand over 10,000 stretches while maintaining clear image quality under extreme conditions, including temperature fluctuations and physical shocks.
The company envisions diverse applications for stretchable displays, including wearable screens for firefighters’ uniforms and adaptive automotive panels. It added that the technology’s flexibility and durability make it ideal for use in industries like fashion, mobility and healthcare, adhering to irregular surfaces such as clothing and skin. However, seeing that the technology is still a prototype, it may be a long while for any brand to actually adopt it to any of their products.
