Apple today has introduced Share Item Location, a new feature in the Find My app that allows users to securely share the location of an AirTag or other Find My network accessory with third parties, such as airlines. Currently available through the public beta of iOS 18.2, this new addition will roll out as a free update for iPhone Xs and later models.
Users can create a Share Item Location link within the Find My app that’s accessible on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The link directs recipients to a website displaying the item’s location on an interactive map, with automatic updates and timestamps for the latest location data. Apple assures that location sharing is temporary, and will automatically expire after seven days or when the owner retrieves their item, therefore maintaining privacy.
The company adds that more than 15 airlines globally – including British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines – will begin accepting Find My item locations as part of their customer service process for locating mishandled or delayed bags. These will implement secure systems to ensure privacy, requiring recipients to authenticate via an Apple Account or partner email to view shared locations. Unfortunately, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, AirAsia and Batik Air aren’t included in the list yet, but Apple promises to add more airlines over time.
Additionally, IT provider for the air transport industry, SITA, plans to incorporate Share Item Location into its WorldTracer system. Used by over 500 airlines globally, this integration will further optimise baggage tracking at more than 2,800 airports.
