Update (8:00PM): A representative of Yes 5G says that local subscribers to GeForce Now will not be subject to the 100-hour play limit, but will still benefit from the improvements like 5.1 surround sound and 1440p streaming.
ORIGINAL STORY (4:12PM):
The NVIDIA GeForce Now cloud gaming subscription service can be a boon for PC gamers without the greatest hardware, but still want to play the latest games. While the service currently provides unlimited hours of play to subscribers, it looks like the company is adding a limit to the hours you can play a month, starting next year.
In a blog post, the graphics card maker says that starting 1 January 2025, new subscribers to NVIDIA GeForce Now will have a monthly playtime cap of 100 hours. Up to 15 of those hours can be rolled over to the next month if left unused. Otherwise, the brand is also selling additional game time in 15-hour sets if you need more than 100. For existing subscribers, or those who sign on before this year ends, they’ll be able to keep their unlimited playtime until 2026 instead.
NVIDIA says that this 100-hour monthly limit “comfortably accommodates 94% of members”. The limit will allow the company “to continue providing exceptional quality and speed – as well as shorter queue times”. In a statement to The Verge, the company says that this will allow it to avoid increasing subscription prices “in the foreseeable future”.
All that being said though, it remains to be seen what effect this change will have on subscribers to NVIDIA GeForce Now in Malaysia. Locally, the service is accessible via Yes 5G, which provides subscription options that are quite different to what is available directly from the company.
For instance, rather than having Performance and Ultimate tiers, the telco is only offering one, with different plan lengths, and a different set of price for those who are not Yes 5G subscribers. There’s also the existing six-hour limit per session. At any rate, we’ve reached out to the telco and will report back when we find out more. A representative of the telco says that local subscribers to GeForce Now will not be subject to the 100-hour play limit, but will still benefit from the improvements like 5.1 surround sound and 1440p streaming.
