U Mobile has been appointed as Malaysia’s second 5G network provider following a tender process administered by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), according to communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. He provided these details in response to questions raised by Hassan Karim, the Member of Parliament for Pasir Gudang, during parliament today on 7 November 2024.
The minister stated that the decision to select U Mobile through this process underscores the government’s commitment to fair practices, avoiding direct award methods. He highlighted that MCMC’s handling of the tender was conducted with rigorous standards to ensure integrity in the decision-making process.
“This decision has to be respected by all because the appointment of the second 5G network provider was made based on good governance and not direct award,” Fahmi said. “MCMC will continue monitoring developments of U Mobile’s second 5G network implementation to ensure that all laws are abided to, under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.”
MCMC announced on 1 November 2024 that the second 5G network in Malaysia will be implemented by U Mobile after it conducted a detailed technical and commercial evaluation. Yesterday, the regulator released a statement to explain its decision, highlighting the telco’s efforts on the Universal Service Provision projects, such as Jendela Phase 1 and the 4G upgrade, which aligns with its goals of improved user experience and service quality.
