Malaysia is set to built a new stadium specifically for eSports, according to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The upcoming stadium will use RM10 million of the RM20 million allocation set aside for the gaming competition industry that was announced for Budget 2025.
The stadium was first proposed by Zahid back in June, saying that the construction of the venue would be a sign of encouragement for the sport. He stated that the remaining funds will be used for training and other activities related to eSports.
Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, added that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes in Sarawak have developed modules to train students to be ready for the eSports industry, as well as courses for content creation. The modules encompass skills such as journalism and commentary, broadcasting production, team management, coaching, event organisation, and technical work.
The minister did not disclose where the stadium will be built or when it can be expected to be operational. During the tablet of next year’s budget, the government announced a total of RM230 million for the youth and sports ministry, with RM20 million going to strengthen Malaysia’s eSports ecosystem.
