OpenAI has launched its own direct competitor to Google with its new ChatGPT-powered search engine. The artificial intelligence company announced that its chatbot is now able to search the web for users to gather information on sports scores, news, stock quotes, and more.
Based on a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, the chatbot will either choose to search the web based on your query or you can manually have it scour the internet by clicking on the web search icon. To get its results, ChatGPT uses third-party search providers as well as content provided directly by its news and data partners such as Associated Press, News Corp, Vox Media, and more.
Instead of a separate app, the new search function is being integrated into its existing desktop and mobile apps as well as its browser-based chatbot. What’s more, the company’s search lead, Adam Fry, has stated that it has no plans to introduce ads to its search engine, which is a strong advantage over Google’s.
The new search function is available now for ChatGPT Plus subscribers and SearchGPT waitlist users, with Enterprise and Edu users getting it in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, for free users, you will have to wait several months before it rolls out to the public.
