Months after it announced that layoffs would occur in October, Intel is now facing another hurdle in the layoff process, one of its own making. Over at Intel Israel, affected staff are reportedly taking their sweet time in deciding on which option they’re being forced to pick by the chipmaker, would benefit them best: accept the severance, or fight their layoffs.
According to Israeli law, every employee in the company is entitled to a hearing after being let go, in the event that they choose to fight the layoff. This would effectively delay the process. Worse, the time it would take each affected employee that chooses to appeal to settle is different.
It’s no secret that Intel’s financial situation is in dire straits. In addition to another round of losses to be expected, it is also still waiting on a US$8.5 billion (~RM37.2 billion), promised by the US government and its Chips Act. It also remains to be seen whether the rumour of Qualcomm will potentially acquire the blue chipmaker. That said, the rumours also suggest that the mobile chipmaker is holding off on said acquisition, at least until after the upcoming US elections, mainly because they want to see if the next administration will be easier or harder to work with, in terms of foreign policy.
In the meantime, another report says that former Intel staff have already been snatched up GPU brand NVIDIA. The employment group includes former employees who had worked at the chipmaker for a decade or more, and comprise specialists in core processor development, hardware architecture, and electric power management, among others.
