TCL today unveiled the TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G in Malaysia, the latest smartphone that’s built around its NXTPAPER technology for a paper-like viewing experience. However, it will take a while, as the company confirmed that the phone will only arrive for the local market this December.
The phone offers a 6.8-inch NXTPAPER 3.0 panel with FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. By flicking the switch on its side, users can switch between three screen modes suited to different content types. This feature is designed to make the device adaptable for various tasks, from reading to general browsing.
The first is Color Paper Mode, which is ideal for comics, audiobooks and reading with vibrant colours. This is followed by Ink Paper Mode for a black-and-white display to reduce eye strain and finally, Max Ink Mode, which delivers a monochrome effect with muted notifications, perfect for undistracted reading.
Under the hood, the TCL 50 PRO NXTPAPER 5G features a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chip, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, which is expandable via a microSD card. Additional features include a 5,150mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging via USB-C, eSIM support, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a 3.5mm audio jack, as well as WiFi, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC connectivity.
In terms of imaging, the camera setup on the back of the phone consists of a 108MP primary lens, an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP macro lens on the back. Flipping over to the front, housed within the punch-hole cutout on its display is a 32MP selfie camera.
The TCL 50 PRO NXTPAPER 5G will be in stores starting 12 December 2024, priced at RM1,199. It will be available in two colourways: Moon Gray and Alps White. The company adds that each purchase of the phone will come with a Flipcase with an integrated T-Pen stylus for free.
In addition to the smartphone, TCL also announced the TCL NXTPAPER 14 tablet, which is expected to hit the Malaysian market between December 2024 and January 2025. However, the company has yet to confirm the device’s local pricing.
The tablet features a 14.3-inch FHD+ NXTPAPER display with a 60Hz refresh rate and supports the brand’s T-Pen stylus. Much like the TCL 50 PRO NXTPAPER 5G, users can switch between the same e-ink modes for different situations.
The TCL NXTPAPER 14 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 processor, and comes with 8GB of RAM (expandable to 16GB virtually) and 256GB of storage. Additionally, it features a 10,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging, quad speakers, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. On its back is a 13MP camera, while in front is a 5MP selfie snapper.
