If you’re driving an EV, chances are your driving experience is limited to urban areas. And while it is possible to drive one, for instance, from the west coast to the east cost of Peninsular Malaysia and back, it would require some planning, as well as luck considering the limited number of charging stations. The situation is set to improve, of course, but according to Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, there is a goal of getting 4,000 charging stations sometime next year.
Bernama reports that the goal of 4,000 charging stations is in support of the government’s plan to use EVs as official cars for ASEAN meetings. According to the report, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced yesterday that EVs will be the official vehicles during Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.
Currently, there are more than 2,000 in the country, though these are mostly concentrated in urban areas. Which is fine for now, as that’s where the aforementioned meetings will be held.
The report also quotes the DPM as saying that the government has a goal “to have 10,000 stations nationwide by 2030, along with providing incentives for EV ownership”. This will also help Malaysia reach the target of 40% renewable energy in the national fuel mix from the current 20%, also by 2030.
