Apple has begun its “exciting week of announcements” with the unveiling of the 2024 iMac. The refreshed AIO (All-In-One) computer arrives with notable internal improvements, especially the addition of the M4 chip, while the exterior remains largely unchanged – save for new colour options and updated accessories. Key changes include a more powerful neural engine and the debut of Apple Intelligence features as part of the macOS Sequoia 15.2 update.
The 2024 iMac retains the 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, which now has an optional nano-texture glass to reduce glare. The onboard M4 chip is available in two configurations which feature either an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU, or a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. Apple claims that everyday tasks will be up to 1.7 times faster, while high-demand activities, like gaming and photo editing, can see a 2.1 times improvement. Memory-wise, the refreshed iMac comes with up to 24GB in RAM and up to1TB of SSD storage for the 8-core M4, and up to 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD for the 10-core option.
Available across both variants is a 12MP webcam, enhanced with Apple’s Centerstage tech that keeps users centred on-screen during video calls. Additionally, it boasts Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports (two on the 8-core model and four on the 10-core), which boosts data transfer speeds and improves compatibility with external devices. The inclusion of Apple Intelligence also brings AI-driven writing and editing features to this desktop, allowing users to explore creative tasks with more ease.
Alongside these performance upgrades, Apple has refreshed its peripheral accessories to meet modern standards. More specifically, the company has introduced updated Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse, which now charge via USB-C instead of the outdated Lightning port.
Surprisingly, both variants are offered at lower starting prices than their respective predecessors. To be more specific, the 2024 iMac with the 8-core M4 chip starts at RM5,799 and RM5,579 for education, while the 10-core version starts at RM6,699 and RM6,269 for education. Both models, as well as the refreshed accessories, are available in green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver colourways. Apple notes that customers in Malaysia will be able to pre-order the new iMacs “soon”, but did not provide an exact date.
