BlackBerry today announced that it has established its Asia Pacific (APAC) regional headquarters in Malaysia, specifically in Cyberjaya. The office is already fully operational and leverages its strategic location near emerging technology hubs and government infrastructure, it added.
This regional expansion builds on a significant partnership between BlackBerry and the Malaysian government that was announced in November 2023. Earlier this year, the company launched its first Cybersecurity Center of Excellence in the country, a facility focused on training and upskilling the nation’s cybersecurity workforce, as part of a collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). This centre aims to prepare Malaysia for the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital world.
BlackBerry revealed that the Cyberjaya office hosts a diverse team of specialists in sales, marketing, threat research, technical support, and cybersecurity training. The company added that its investment aligns with the country’s goal to build a future-ready workforce, focusing on developing a highly skilled talent pool to support both national and regional cybersecurity needs.
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed his support for BlackBerry’s decision, noting that the new headquarters would not only benefit Malaysia but also the broader region, thanks to the company’s advanced solutions. He sees the initiative as a positive step towards enhancing regional cybersecurity and fostering innovation.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry’s vice president of cybersecurity for APAC Tash Stamatelos emphasised Malaysia’s strategic importance to the company. With the country set to chair ASEAN in 2024, he praised its efforts in digital transformation, regional cooperation, and investment in skills and infrastructure. He also highlighted that these factors make Malaysia an attractive destination for global companies like BlackBerry to invest and operate in, solidifying its role as a trusted regional hub.
