The Apple rumour mill has had quite a run with the much talked-about smart home display with a robotic arm, but a lot less about it supposedly more affordable counterpart. In the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s Power-On newsletter, he’s shared more details about what it would look like, and perhaps by extension the main product itself.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, the supposed lower end Apple smart home display is described as “may be a little smaller than expected”. Gurman cites sources that claim that it will have a square display, “about the size of two iPhones side by side”. Which isn’t much even if you’re generous and look at the largest Pro Max models.
This small square screen is also “positioned at an angle on a small base, reminiscent of the circular bottom of the iMac G4”. The newsletter also mentions that Apple may put speakers in this base, which basically turns the device into a HomePod with a screen. Gurman then reiterates that the device is primarily meant to be a device that controls smart home accessories, as well as the tentative release window of next year.
These descriptions for the more affordable option may also apply to the more premium one with the robotic arm, plus likely a larger screen. This is still noted as not hitting the market before 2026, and with a price tag closer to US$1,000 (~RM4,362).
