Last month, HMD introduced a new modular smartphone called the Fusion. What makes this phone stand out is that its smart pins on the back allow the phone to be fitted with a number of first-party and even third-party interchangeable covers.
While there has been no announcement, the Fusion has quietly made its way to Malaysia via the official Nokia Shopee store, which lists the customisable smartphone at RM1,299. Additionally, it introduces a new gaming “outfit” that seems to be gaming controller pads that the phone can be slotted into, which costs an additional RM100. Keep in mind that the Nokia store only offers supplier warranty, not manufacturer warranty.
Both the smartphone itself and the gaming outfit combo are currently being offered at a promotional price of RM1,199. Unfortunately, the brand is not offering the other “outfits” for the device that adds features such as wireless charging, rugged protection, a ring light, and more. However, if you have a 3D printer, you can make your own cover with the Fusion Development Kit.
With its semi-transparent shell, the smartphone boasts high repairability, claiming that customers are able to replace the battery, screen, and other key components. That being said, it is unclear if HMD will start offering spare parts in Malaysia, though.
As for the specs, the Fusion sports a 6.56-inch 720p LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 600 nits. Under the hood, it runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable storage. Additionally, it comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and has an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance.
Imaging wise, it features a 108MP camera with OIS alongside a depth sensor and a 50MP front shooter. Powering the modular phone is a 5,000mAh battery with support for 33W charging. On the connectivity side, it supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and NFC. The mid-ranger also ships with Android 14 and promises two major Android upgrades.
