Back in July, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Ring and in its wake, opened up speculation that competitors such as Apple and Xiaomi may soon unveil their own smart ring models. The rise of smart rings has presented some challenges in terms of sizing though, chief among them being that, unlike wrist-based wearables, rings do not have a one-size-fits-all.
A recent patent filed by Xiaomi showcases a design for a smart ring that can automatically adjust itself to fit different finger sizes. In addition to its auto-adjusting feature, Xiaomi’s patent suggests that the ring would support various connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, 5G, and NFC, while also incorporating health sensors, a touch panel, and a microphone and speaker. In other words, not only can users expect health tracking features but other smart features that enhance the ring’s functionality when paired with other devices.
Getting the right size for a smart ring is critical because the sensors inside need to maintain appropriate contact with the skin for accurate tracking of the heart rate and sleep patterns. At current, buyers must first use a sizing kit to ensure they select the correct fit before placing an order. Given the inherent variability in ring sizes, manufacturers must offer a wide range of options, complicating both production and the purchasing experience.
Xiaomi isn’t the only one that is looking into a one-size-fits-all ring. Oura has also filed a patent for a similar concept. If successfully developed, these next-generation smart rings could simplify the sizing dilemma, allowing customers to avoid the complexities of selecting from various sizes. While there’s no guarantee that these innovations will reach the market, the increasing interest in smart rings suggests that a practical solution is on the horizon.
