Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has officially announced the arrival of Max in seven countries, including Malaysia. It will be available here starting from 19 November 2024, along with Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
This comes just weeks after WDB announced the expansion of the streaming service in Southeast Asia by the end of the year. The platform will offer a wide-ranging catalogue that will include content from HBO, Cartoon Network, Discovery, TLC, AFN, Food Network, HGTV, Max Originals, Hollywood films, and more.
Initially introduced in May 2020 as “HBO Max”, the service was supposedly planned for a release into 61 markets by the end of 2021, but the expansion never made it into Asia until its debut in Japan last month. Interestingly, James Gibbons, president of APAC for WBD, has previously stated that Max would be replacing HBO GO in the region.
With the upcoming arrival of the streaming service in Malaysia, WDB noted that additional details will be announced in the coming weeks, which will likely include local pricing as well as the transition process for GO subscribers. On its Malaysian website, its FAQ states that those with an HBO GO plan will get access to Max and that you will be able to sign in using your existing GO account email and password.
While the price is still unknown, the platform will offer a total of three plans for Malaysian subscribers. There will be the Mobile plan, which offers streaming on one mobile device at a time at 720p with 15 downloads to watch on the go, the Standard plan that comes with the ability to stream on two devices at 1080p with 30 downloads, and the Ultimate plan that is packaged with support for four simultaneous streams, 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos, and 100 downloads.
