Fujifilm has introduced the X-M5, the latest addition to its M series of mirrorless cameras. As the lightest camera in Fujifilm’s X-Series, it is particularly suited to those who want a single, portable device for various types of content creation. The camera retains Fujifilm’s signature dial-focused design and introduces the Film Simulation Mode Dial, first seen in the X-T50 model, positioned on the top left for easy access.
At the heart of Fujifilm X-M5 is a 26.1-megapixel backside-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, powered by the X-Processor 5 engine, which together promise high-quality images with efficient power usage. In terms of performance, the X-M5 can shoot at 8 fps using its mechanical shutter and an impressive 20 fps in electronic mode, with continuous autofocus. This is complemented by the ability to capture up to 82 compressed RAW frames before the buffer fills.
Fujifilm has integrated its advanced autofocus technology into the X-M5, featuring subject-detection capabilities powered by artificial intelligence. The camera can detect and track a wide range of subjects, including animals, vehicles, and even drones, while also using Face and Eye autofocus.
For video, the X-M5 offers 6.2K open gate 3:2 capture, 4K 60p, and Full HD at up to 240 fps, though there’s some cropping at higher frame rates. However, it lacks in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), a feature found in many of Fujifilm’s higher-end models. Instead, it relies on digital image stabilisation, which Fujifilm claims is effective for minor shakes and movement during handheld video recording.
Additionally, the X-M5 also offers a 3-inch, 1.04-million dot fully articulating display, which can rotate outwards for easier filming. Other features include three internal microphones for surround-sound recording, a vertical recording mode for social media, high-speed movie transfer, up to 440 frames of battery life, a single UHS-I card slot, and 20 Film Simulations where eight of which are directly accessible from the mode dial.
The X-M5 will be available in two colours: silver and black. For the Malaysian market, Fujifilm has confirmed that the body-only version will retail for RM3,948, while a kit paired with a 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens will be priced at RM4,398. However, the company has yet to reveal when the camera will be available locally.
