The fear of losing our jobs to AI is ever present, and recently, some numbers that apply specifically to the local job market have emerged. An estimate by the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) points at the possibility of 600,000 workers from 10 key industries having their jobs taken over.
According to the Malay Mail, the estimate is part of a report by Talentcorp, with the report itself being released sometime in November alongside a dedicated website for it. At the same time though, Kesuma minister Steven Sim is cited as saying that “there could be 60 new types of jobs to come out of the technologies in the next three to five years”.
With that, the minister says that “people with highly impacted jobs can easily transition into new roles”. He also says that the purpose of the report “is so we can prepare ourselves”, and not “be caught by surprise”.
The report is expected to break down sectors which will be most affected by the rise of AI within 10 sectors, with specific jobs being broken down into high, medium and low impacted. On the other hand, the website is noted to be able to help workers transition to new jobs that emerge as a result, providing info and incentives for upskilling or reskilling.
