A Japanese company by the name of Elecom appears to have beaten everyone to the punch by creating what it hails as the world’s first and officially certified USB4 2.0 cables. Set to launch in two SKUs come mid-December, these new cables will be limited to sales within Japan initially, while news of wider availability is still unknown.
The current USB4 standard is limited to just 40Gbps which, at current, is technically more than plenty to facilitate lightning-fast transfer speeds. With USB4 2.0, those transfer speeds are doubled to 80Gbps.
Blinding transfer speeds aren’t the endgame here, though. For Elecom, its two cable variants also support higher-than-average power delivery (PD) – the first SKU supports up to 60W PD, while the second variant can reach a crotch-busting 240W at 48V/5A. Needless to say, these cable are also able to support DisplayPort passthrough at resolutions up to 8K@60Hz.
It is worth noting that, while USB4 2.0 can theoretically achieve higher transfer speeds. Up to 120Gbps, in fact. However, those speeds would be one-directional.
