LG recently announced that it has teamed up with both Razer and MediaTek, in order to create a new Bluetooth gaming controller designed to reduce input lag for cloud-based gaming. According to LG, this is the first controller to incorporate Ultra-Low Latency (ULL) Bluetooth technology, in an ongoing effort to make wireless controllers as quick and responsive as wired ones.
During the recent webOS Summit, LG showcased its BT ULL-enabled controller in comparison with a standard model. The demonstration highlighted how the ULL technology enhances responsiveness, decreases input lag, and improves control precision across various cloud-based games, including first-person shooters, fighting games, and racing titles.
Input lag on Bluetooth controllers can be different due to a variety of factors but typically, anything below 10 to 20 milliseconds is preferred. Wired controllers generally offer lower latency, making them preferable for competitive gaming. The new ULL controller reportedly achieves an input lag of just 1 millisecond during testing.
BT ULL functionality will be integrated into select LG 120Hz OLED and QNED TVs that use MediaTek’s MT7921 WiFi chipset, and are scheduled to launch in 2025. LG also intends to introduce a certification for third-party ULL-compatible controllers to ensure compatibility with LG’s webOS smart TVs, with Razer being the first to qualify.
At current, there are no details regarding the pricing, release date, or official name of the new controller. It’s very likely that more information for both the controller and LG’s ULL-supported TVs will be revealed at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025.
