Apple is set to introduce the first wave of its much-anticipated Apple Intelligence features via the upcoming release of iOS 18.1 on October 28, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. As noted in his latest Power On newsletter, the update will be available for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 users, marking the beginning of Apple’s foray into advanced AI-powered features. Gurman notes that Apple delayed the original launch date of Apple Intelligence by a month to ensure a smooth rollout and to prepare its cloud servers for increased demand.
The iOS 18.1 update will offer enhanced writing tools for rewriting, summarising, and proofreading text, alongside a redesigned Siri interface. Additionally, users can expect notification summaries for apps like Messages and Mail, and a new “Clean Up” tool in the Photos app, which can remove unwanted elements from images using generative AI.
Gurman adds that more advanced Apple Intelligence features, such as support for ChatGPT, Image Playground for creative AI-driven visuals and Genmoji for custom emoji creation, will only arrive via iOS 18.2 sometime in December. Meanwhile, a complete overhaul of Siri, promising more personalised responses and refined app control, is slated for early 2025.
While Apple Intelligence is designed for iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, it has been available in beta on Macs and iPads with M1 chips and above, broadening access to these AI tools. There are also rumours that the upcoming iteration of the company’s iPhone SE will support Apple Intelligence, expanding its reach further.
