Google Japan has unveiled a circular-design mechanical keyboard with a Möbius strip concept, and it’s called the Gboard Double-Sided Version. It features 26 connected modules, each equipped with eight keys, totaling 208 with access to the keys on both sides.
The Japanese branch posted a demonstration video showcasing its employees manipulating the keyboard like an accordion while sitting in a circle, highlighting its 360-degree design. Aside from the playful interaction, the keyboard’s build also makes it simple enough to carry around and store.
While the keyboard’s design may not be practical for everyday use, its features are commonly found in other high-end models, including hot-swappable MX keys and per-key RGB lighting. We should mention that it is limited to only USB-C connectivity as well.
The double-sided layout, although unconventional, could serve a purpose in Japanese typing, where the language requires many more symbols than English. A keyboard with 208 keys may simplify the process of accessing certain Japanese characters. Additionally, the Gboard includes keys for emojis and even mathematical symbols.
