As a store digital games store front, the Epic Games Store is obviously not as popular as Steam. But the one thing that it has going for it besides sometimes questionable exclusivity deals are the pretty frequent free games being given away. And it looks like the company is extending this to its mobile front as well.
At the Unreal Fest in Seattle, Epic Games Store general manager Steve Allison was quoted as saying that “the free games program will launch in Q4 along with third party apps showing up”. Which means that it will happen pretty soon as we’re already in the last quarter of the year.
As for the third party apps bit, Allison noted that the mobile Epic Games Store will get “somewhere between 10 and 50” games that are not Fortnite. It remains to be seen if these will be introduced with the same cadence as the free games.
The mobile Epic Games Store was first announced back in March of this year, for both Android and iOS, though with massive caveats for both platforms. For the latter, this is only happening in Europe due to EU competition rulings. As for the former, you can’t get it from the Google Play Store. Users of both platforms must instead download the APK file from the company’s site, which presents its own hurdles.
