Meta is rolling out a new feature on Threads that lets you tag your location on a post. Although it doesn’t appear to have officially rolled out yet, some users have already reported seeing the update in the Threads app.
This feature is similar to the location tagging on Instagram. When users allow Threads to access their location, they’ll receive a list of nearby places to tag, with the option to search for specific locations manually.
Meta has plans to utilise location sharing to better customise the app by offering personalised content related to places nearby. The update could help improve its search functionality and make the app more convenient for following breaking news and other events.
Along with the location tagging feature, Meta could eventually introduce advertising to Threads as well. The company plans on expanding the platform more before integrating ads and attaining users’ consent for location sharing would provide better data for targeted advertising. For now, the location sharing function only appears to be available on the mobile version of the app, and not browsers. On that note, it is unclear if Meta plans on rolling out the feature towards the latter platform.
