Malaysia can explore opportunities to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) technologies from China, said communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. During a working visit to China, he highlighted that these technologies have potential applications across several local sectors such as telecommunications, media, broadcasting, and film. He noted that the country can learn from China’s advancements and adapt relevant technologies to address local challenges.
Fahmi emphasised that AI-based solutions could address some of the country’s unique challenges, particularly in enhancing telecommunications infrastructure in underserved regions. He pointed to a joint venture between Altel and Geespace as an example, which focuses on satellite technology, particularly direct-to-cell connectivity, that could help improve communication in remote areas of Malaysia.
Beyond telecommunications, Fahmi also saw potential in real-time translation technology, particularly in the film industry. He believed that this technology could help Malaysian content reach a broader international audience by overcoming language barriers. His visit to China Media Group (CMG) also provided him with valuable insights into how AI could transform broadcasting and content production in Malaysia.
Fahmi is encouraging Malaysia’s media agencies, including Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), Bernama and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), to accelerate the creation of exportable content. He pointed out that micro-dramas under one minute in length, which are increasingly popular in China, could be an area of opportunity for Malaysia. By promoting local content, he is hoping to attract more tourists from China and boost the nation’s international presence.
