ByteDance announced that it is shutting down its music streaming service, TikTok Music, on 28 November 2024. The was disclosed via the platform‘s website, which is only available to subscribers in Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico until the closing date.
Ole Obermann, the platform’s Global Head of Music Business Development, stated that the decision to close TikTok Music aligns with the company’s goal of enhancing TikTok’s role in the music ecosystem. As per the notice given, subscriptions will be automatically cancelled, and users are asked to transfer their playlists to other streaming services by 28 October, as well as submit refund requests by the final closure date.
TikTok says that it will continue partnering with music streaming services rather than competing with them. In February, the company launched an “Add to Music” feature on the primary TikTok app, which lets users add tracks directly to a playlist on Apple Music, Amazon Music, or Spotify.
TikTok Music first launched in Indonesia and Brazil in July 2023, taking the place of a former music platform from ByteDance called Resso. The platform was first introduced in 2019 as a closed beta in Australia, Mexico, and Singapore, with a full launch in those regions that October. Although ByteDance filed for a “TikTok Music” trademark in May 2022, Resso has never officially launched in the US.
