A recent Opensignal report ranks Malaysia second in 5G download speed among 13 Asia Pacific countries, with an average speed of 295.5Mbps. Taking the lead is South Korea with 427.5Mbps, while placing third and fourth is New Zealand and Singapore with 293.8Mbps and 285Mbps respectively. The data was collected between 1 April and 30 June 2024.
While Malaysia’s position in terms of download speed is commendable, it still lags behind South Korea and Taiwan in the upload speed category, taking third place. As per the network analytics company‘s report, the country has an average upload speed of 34Mbps, while the leader and runner up records an average of 52.2Mbps and 35.4Mbps respectively.
The report further highlights Malaysia’s 5G availability, where the country ranks fourth in APAC, with users connected to 5G networks 31.8% of the time. This places the country behind India (52.1%), Singapore (35.9%), and South Korea (34%). The availability figure reflects how often users can access 5G networks in frequently visited locations.
Opensignal also notes that Malaysia has recorded one of the largest speed improvements between 4G and 5G in Asia Pacific. Over 37% of the country’s connections are now 5G-based, marking a significant shift from previous generations of mobile technology. However, Malaysia ranks 10th in 5G coverage experience, scoring 2.6, compared to Singapore’s leading score of 9.0.
Last week, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed that Malaysia has achieved 81.9% 5G coverage in populated areas. He added that a total of 7,191 5G sites have been developed nationwide, with 564 and 551 sites in Sabah and Sarawak respectively.
