Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, will soon be making its way to Malaysia. This is according to James Gibbons, president of APAC for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), at a conference in Bali, Indonesia.
WBD confirmed that Max will be launching in five markets in Southeast Asia, as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong, by the end of 2024. This will see the new streaming service replacing the existing HBO Go platform. While no specific date was given, Gibbons said that the aforementioned countries will see the launch of Max in the “coming weeks and months”.
The streaming service was launched back in May 2020 and has had a slow rollout in Asia, with it only being available in Japan starting today. In June 2021, what was then known as WarnerMedia announced an expansion into 61 markets, including Malaysia, by the end of 2021, but no such launches happened.
HBO GO was introduced here in 2019, offering limited content and can be bundled together with Astro and Unifi TV packages — the platform discontinued its Live TV feature last year. It is also available as a standalone subscription for RM34.90/month or RM69.90 for a three-month plan.
