Nintendo has submitted a patent for a new device to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under the model number CLO-001. The number indicates that it’s a completely new product, instead of the anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, the device is classified simply as a “wireless device,” distinguishing it from the “wireless game console” label associated with the Switch.
The device does not include a battery and it only functions when plugged in. The device seems to be powered via USB-C and features a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio along with a 24GHz mmWave sensor, but it lacks both 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi capabilities and Bluetooth. The presence of the 24GHz mmWave sensor raises the possibility that it may be able to track movement, potentially allowing it to activate when something approaches.
At this point, these are only speculations and the details about the device are quite limited, which leaves us with many questions about its purpose and functionality. As with the majority of patents, this submission could either evolve into a consumer product or fade away without further announcement.
Regardless of its fate, more information will be anticipated in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see how this mysterious device fits into Nintendo’s future plans.
