Samsung has to pay up a huge sum after it lost a lawsuit over wireless charging patent infringements in Texas last week. A jury in the state’s federal court determined that the South Korean tech giant owes patent owner Mojo Mobility over US$192.1 million (~RM807 million).
According to the court documents, the jury agreed that chargers for Samsung smartphones, smartwatches, and its other devices violate Mojo Mobility’s patent rights in wireless charging technology, which was developed by engineer Afshin Partovi. Moreover, the verdict found that Samsung willfully infringed the patents, which could potentially lead to the judge multiplying the award by up to three times.
The lawsuit was filed by Mojo against the tech brand back in 2022, stating that Partovi and other Mojo employees actually flew to Samsung’s headquarters in South Korea several times in 2013 to discuss a potential deal for the use of the company’s technology. Mojo also claims that Samsung later used Mojo’s inventions in wireless chargers for hundred of products without a licence after talks broke down.
Samsung denied these allegations and argued that Mojo’s patents were invalid. In a separate patent case in the same Texas court back in April, the South Korean giant was hit with a US$142 million (~RM597 million) verdict over 5G wireless technology.
