It is rumoured that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, which is expected to launch sometime early next year, may require the use of two 12VHPWR or 16-pin power connectors to run.
The rumours stems from images of multiple power supplies made by NVIDIA brand partners, made in anticipation of the upcoming RTX 5090. One such brand is MSI whom, in one image courtesy of Tweaktown, shows a 1600W PSU sporting two 12V-2×6 power connectors built into it. For the uninitiated, currently existing PSUs only have one of them built in, primarily to accommodate the current RTX 40 Series GPUs.
One 12VHPWR is rated and capable of 600W and given the rumours that the RTX 5090 could require that much power to run, the extra 12VHPWR on upcoming PSUs may just be a way for them to spread out the power delivery. One must also remember that the GPU isn’t the only component that demands copious amounts of power; there’s also the CPU.
The obvious downside to this RTX 5090 rumour, should it turn out to be true, means that those looking to own the GPU will likely have no choice but to switch out their current PSU for one with two 12VHPWR connectors, even if their current is working fine. But again, this is still just a rumours, so fingers crossed it won’t come to that.
