Jony Ive is probably best known for his design work for Apple, despite having left the company for over half a decade at this point. He was previously reported to be working with OpenAI for some sort of device. More recently this has been confirmed, in a piece on Ive by the New York Times.
Since the report is about what Ive has been up to in general and not the OpenAI device, there’s not much detail as to what it actually entails. The AI product itself hasn’t actually solidified into a, well, product, never mind when it will be sold.
Instead, what was mentioned was the discussion between Ive and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI on abstracts like “how generative AI made it possible to create a new computing device because the technology could do more for users than traditional software”. Also noted was that the meeting between Ive and Altman was made possible via Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb.
The article, linked below, is probably worth a read if you’re interested in what Ive has been up to since he left Apple, even if it is locked behind a paywall. But if you’re after more info on the device, then you’re out of luck.
