Earlier in the week, YouTube confirmed that users will start seeing ads when pausing videos. This will presumably not affect those with a Premium subscription, the whole point of which is to not see ads by paying up. But it looks like you’ll have to fork out more money for that benefit, as the video hosting service has announced price hikes for YouTube Premium.
This price hike looks to affect all available plans for the subscription service. Previously costing RM17.90 a month, the Individual plan of YouTube Premium now costs RM20.90 a month. It’s a similar story with the Family plan, which has gone from RM33.90 a month to RM41.90 a month. Even the Student plan has seen a hike, going from RM10.90 to RM12.90 a month.
The change looks to be immediate for those who are not yet YouTube Premium subscribers, though current subscribers may have this change reflected in an upcoming billing cycle. A reader has shared with us screenshots showing that Individual plan subscribers will see this change take effect starting 27 October. As for the Family plan, this will take effect starting 6 November, though these dates may differ depending on individual billing cycles.
At any rate though, it looks like the cost for not seeing ads have gone up for Malaysian YouTube Premium subscribers. It looks like it’s not just affecting us either, as a Reddit post indicates that Singaporeans are also seeing a hike, with the Family plan going from SGD17 (~RM55) to SGD27 (~RM88).
