Huawei has announced the global debut of its latest tablet, the MatePad Pro 12.2, which will be coming to the Malaysian market next week. It’s basically meant to be the brand’s competitor to Apple’s iPad Pro, especially in terms of the display, in a bigger package.
As you can tell from the name, the MatePad Pro 12.2 sports a large 12.2-inch OLED display with a 144Hz display, tandem OLED technology, and a PaperMatte texture. The brand claims that the screen can get up to 2,000 nits for brightness, which is certainly a lot brighter than the iPad Pro’s 1,600-nit figure.
The reason by the brand wants to compare its tablet to Apple’s is mainly because both of them is fitted with tandem OLED, which is basically when the screen uses two layers of OLED to achieve higher brightness while still getting the great contrast you usually find in OLED panels without the usual downside of a dimmer display.
To its credit, in the short amount of time I spent with the tablet, it really was a pleasant experience. All the colours on the screen were bright and vivid while still maintaining those deep blacks and with a 144Hz refresh rate, everything just felt buttery smooth.
Additionally, the PaperMatte finish made using the tablet a nearly glare-free experience, even in a bright setting. Using the pencil with it does give it a “paper-ish” feel, although I’m not sure if I would prefer to have that texture on a daily basis.
Handling-wise, wise, what can I say other than the fact that it’s a hefty device given its size. It’s not that much heavier than an iPad Pro, but it’s not exactly the kind of tablet that I would be walking around the house with often. Although, with the its size and high display quality, it does make a good machine for media consumption, especially with its quad-speakers.
On the optics side, the MatePad Pro 12.2 features two cameras on the back, a 13MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide lens, as well as a 16MP sensor up front. Powering the large device is a 10,100mAh battery that charges at an incredible speed of 100W, which is probably one of the fastest charging speeds I’ve seen on a tablet. Huawei claims that it can last up to 14 hours with local video playback and up to 380 days on standby mode.
The MatePad Pro 12.2 will be arriving in Malaysia on 26 September 2024 along with the new Watch GT 5 series. For those who are interested, you can pre-order the tablet now through the brand’s online store.
