Coinciding with PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, the Sony video games division has announced special edition versions of the PS5 console. Specifically the one colloquially called the Slim, as well as the recently announced Pro model. This means that there will be a limited number of these consoles coming in the grey of the very first PlayStation console.
While both limited edition PS5 models will also be getting a matching grey DualSense controller, the Pro goes a step further by also including a grey DualSense Edge. Also included in the Pro set is the charging station for the controllers, also in the iconic grey.
Beyond these two extra additions for the PS5 Pro, both limited edition sets share the other themed extras. This includes a USB-C cable with one end looking like the plug for the PS1 controller, cable ties with the PlayStation face button shapes, stickers, paperclips, and one out of 30 possible limited edition posters. Both also come with a vertical stand and disc drive console cover included, but not the drive itself.
Worth mentioning that the special edition DualSense Edge is also purchasable separately, as is the PlayStation Portal, but as before, you’ll need a variant of the PS5 console to make use of that.
One additional plus point that these special edition PS5 consoles and accessories have over their vanilla counterparts, beyond the grey colour, is just the fact that they have more colour in general. Where the PlayStation logo is present, it’s here with its full range of colour, rather than just a simple, fully black or white version of itself. For the controllers, colours return to its face buttons.
But of course, PlayStation giving its special edition products the original PS1 paint job is nothing new by now. The company already did it with the PS4 in conjunction with its 20th anniversary for the PS4, and previous CEO Jim Ryan got the original PS5 in the exact same colourway as the Slim and Pro, USB-C mimicking the PS1 controller plug included.
The PlayStation Blog announcing the special editions did not mention the exact number of units available, save for the PS5 Pro bundle. And it is proper limited too, with only 12,300 sets in total, and each console having one of the numbers within the range etched onto it. The number itself is a reference to the launch date of the original PlayStation, which is 3 December 1994. None of these yet have a price attached to them yet.
While it doesn’t yet have a local price, its US$ pricing of the PS5 Pro is already eye-watering as it is. And considering the 20th anniversary PS4 saw its price ballooning from RM1,779 to over RM70,000 thanks to scalpers, you can probably expect something similar for the PS5 Pro.
