Flappy Bird is back, 11 years after it was pulled off the digital shelves by its creator, Dong Nguyen. The game made a surprise return last week and even blasted it on the game’s official X account with the message “I AM BACK!!”. There is one tiny catch though: this new version of the game has absolutely nothing to do with its creator, at all.
The game is being resurrected by a group called The Flappy Bird Foundation. As per its official announcement, it says that it is “committed to preserving the Flappy Bird IP” and expanding its legacy further. Again, the game’s original creator, Nguyen has absolutely nothing to do with the game, and he’s even made it clear on Twitter of his involvement with the resurrection, or lack thereof. “No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything. I also don’t support crypto.”
That last part of Nguyen’s statement is interesting to note because it ties back to the foundation’s chief creative officer, Michael Roberts. Roberts is something of a controversial figure in the cryptocurrency scene, primarily because of his company, 1208 Productions, and its heavy involvement in the NFT and cryptocurrency space which, to no one’s surprise, very quickly drew negative responses from the gaming community as a whole.
The official trailer says that the new version of Flappy Bird will be coming back soon, but no exact date has been provided. It’s expected to be available across both iOS and Android.
