The Ministry of Transport and Road Transport Department (JPJ) have announced what is called the JPJePlate. This is supposed to be the new standardised number plates, and the announcement comes as part of its pilot phase. As part of this phase, it will come pre-installed for EVs that are delivered starting from today, 9 September.
On its dedicated site, the JPJePlate is noted to come with a number of benefits over the standard acrylic number plates, of which Malaysia is apparently among the last 5% of countries to still be using. Among them are better durability and visibility, as well as a few anti-forgery features like an anti-counterfeiting foil and a digital signature via QR. It will also come with one-way screws to prevent theft.
Other features on the JPJePlate include the Malaysian flag, and the MAL abbreviation, both on the left side. This section is also colour-coded to indicate the type of fuel a vehicle uses, such as green for EVs.
In an FAQ page, the JPJePlate is stated to be mandatory for EVs, including those powered by hydrogen-fuel cells. That being said, no specific deadline was mentioned for those who got their EVs before the aforementioned 9 September date. Also mentioned here is that “further expansions to include other types of vehicles will be announced in due course”.
While it is optional for internal combustion vehicles for now, those who want the JPJePlate on their vehicle can register their interest via the official site, linked below. A set, which consists of one front plate and one rear plate, as well as an RFID windshield sticker, costing RM98. Replacing them would cost RM70, RM30 and RM35, respectively.
