Windows laptops sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips have been slowly popping up over the past few months. So it’s not surprising that dedicated software for them are also appearing. One that is coming to Arm-based Windows laptops later this year is Google Drive.
The Verge reports that Google “has committed to releasing an Arm64 version of Google Drive on Windows”, though unfortunately no specific date was mentioned. Though as a strange aside, the report mentions that following the announcement at IFA 2024 by Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, what’s coming immediately to Snapdragon X laptops are NordVPN and Express VPN.
For heavy users of the cloud storage offering by the internet search giant, the absence of Google Drive for Snapdragon X Windows laptops is a strange one. It’s especially strange as from the presentation, other cloud storage options, perhaps most prominently OneDrive, is already available. Though for more casual users who don’t need their local files constantly being backed up on the internet, this may be less of an issue, as the web browser version would usually suffice.
At any rate, it looks like it would take awhile before there is app availability parity between conventional x64 Windows systems and their Arm counterparts. Beyond Google Drive, 9to5Google reports that another surprising omission on the latter platform for now is Quick Share, the internet search giant’s file-sharing app for Android devices.
