The whole idea behind Instagram Stories is for them to not be permanent posts, at least for everyone besides the poster. With that in mind, leaving comments would seem a bit pointless, as they would disappear along with the post when its time is up. But the Meta subsidiary making that change anyway, allowing comments to be left on a disappearing Story.
Of course, with Instagram Stories being impermanent posts, so will their comments. As The Verge reports, comments on Stories will only last for up to 24 hours, but while they’re there, anyone who can see the Stories will be able to see them too. Leaving one though requires that both the one who shared the Story and the one trying to comment be following each other.
Said report also includes a statement from platform spokesperson Emily Norfolk, who says that users have the option to enable or disable comments for their own Instagram Stories, even from mutual followers. That being said, it’s unclear if these will be archived the way Stories are for their posters.
This is technically an improvement to the way comments used to work for Instagram Stories, which just has said comments be sent to the user as a private message. But at the same time, having comments that disappear as if you never left them seemed a bit odd. Then again, so are Stories themselves as an idea, but they’ve been popular enough to warrant new features added to them.
