Early last month, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the upcoming Mac mini, armed with Apple’s M4 chip, will be getting a redesign. This will result in it having a slightly smaller footprint, in exchange for being a bit taller. More recently, Gurman has shared more details about the redesigned Mac mini, including the number of ports that it is getting.
This comes via his weekly newsletter Power On, in which Gurman states that the design revamp will see the Mac mini sport up to five USB-C ports. Three of them will be in front, while the remaining two will sit at the back, or so goes the claim.
But like the smaller footprint, this comes at a cost, kind of. To make way for the higher-than-usual number of USB-C ports, it will instead have no USB-A ports. Which sounds like adapters are going to be necessary if you want to keep using older peripherals with it. For what it’s worth, the new design of the Mac mini will allow it to keep other ports around as well, from the HDMI and LAN ports to the 3.5mm audio jack.
Also mentioned in the newsletter is a lower-end Magic Keyboard to complement the new one that launched with the M4 iPad Pro earlier in the year. This new one is slated for “the middle of next year”, and is meant to be paired with the “entry level iPad or the new iPad Airs”. It is claimed to be lacking expensive features like the metal palm rest, but will be getting new features of its own in return, such as a function row.
