Tecno recently announced its newest tri-fold concept phone, the Phantom Ultimate 2. Building on last year’s Phantom Ultimate rollable concept, this new device features a display design that expands to a 10-inch display when fully extended, offering a screen size on par with full-sized tablets.
The Phantom Ultimate 2 starts as a compact 6.48-inch device but unfolds into a 10-inch LTPO OLED screen with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Tecno has also included the integration of TDDI technology, combining the display driver and touch sensor onto a single chip, resulting in a thinner layout.
A notable feature of the device is its dual hinge mechanism, which has been rigorously tested for durability, apparently enduring 300,000 folds. The dual hinge supposedly minimises the visible crease in the middle of the screen while maintaining its slim build, making it an engineering feat of sorts. In effect, the phone uses very thin layouts for both the device and its battery cover, allowing to maintain a thickness of 11mm when completely folded, while its battery cover which only measures 0.25mm.
The Phantom Ultimate 2 has several different modes, including a laptop mode where the device’s bottom half can be laid flat and turned into a keyboard, while the tent mode allows the screen to be positioned for dual-screen interactions, making it ideal for video calls and live translations. The 10-inch display has a multi-window functionality where it supposedly lets users run multiple apps simultaneously.
Tecno has not yet announced any specific details regarding the official launch of the Phantom Ultimate 2. However, it’s worth mentioning that the device’s design and features could likely mark its own advancement in the foldable smartphone market.
