The Barbie Phone, HMD‘s throwback flip phone featuring a theme inspired by Mattel’s popular toy franchise, is now official. Marketed as “the perfect tool to live your best life and take a vacation from your smartphone”, it ships without social media apps and lacks support for any data-based connectivity.
Being a Barbie tie-in, the phone (as well as its removable battery) is decked out in different pink colours, while a 1.77-inch external screen with a reflective surface is present on the front cover. The latter is designed to help you frame your selfies when using the built-in 0.3MP camera, which also is accompanied by a flash module. Flipping the phone open, we’re greeted with a 2.8-inch display and a T9 keypad with design elements that light up in the dark.
Despite being an anti-smartphone per say, it does come with some modern touches. These include a USB-C port at the bottom for charging and data transfer, an onboard digital well-being app, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. Other than that, it comes with 64MB (yes, megabytes) RAM, 128MB storage, FM radio capability, MP3 music support, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. In case you’re wondering, the Snake mobile game is also pre-installed.
You’ll also be glad to know that the Barbie Phone comes with additional accessories, including two different back covers, a pink USB-C cable, and a beaded phone strap that you can adorn with charms. Additionally, included in the package are stickers and stick-on gems to further decorate your phone with.
The new Barbie Phone is slated to be available in the US on 1 October, priced at US$129 (~RM560). It is already listed on HMD Malaysia’s website, which means it will be released locally in the near future. However, there’s no local pricing just yet.
