Rumours suggest that an upgraded PlayStation 5, possibly the PS5 Pro, is set to be released by the end of this year. Jeff Grub from Giant Bomb mentioned the imminent arrival of the new console, may be featured at the brand’s upcoming State of Play event, which is expected to take place sometime in September. He also hinted that the console could be priced around US$600 (~RM2,614), or potentially even US$700 (~RM3,050), which is a price increase from the current model.
At a recent Gamescom conference, developers shared that the PS5 Pro’s release could impact the launch schedules of upcoming games. One developer, though, highlighted that its new hardware might have substantial improvements in performance over the standard PS5, particularly in handling Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. Despite Sony’s reticence on the PS5 Pro’s release, it seems many developers are already working with development kits.

Regarding performance, The PS5 Pro could end up with CPU performance similar to the current PS5 but with enhanced GPU and AI capabilities. This could boost overall graphics performance by up to 45% and potentially double, even triple ray-tracing performance.
In addition to these hardware improvements, Sony’s new “Spectral Super Resolution” technology could also makes its debut here, with upscaling capabilities similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). It seems likely that certain game titles will have higher frame rates and sharper visuals.
As we wait for further official details from Sony, it seems evident that the PS5 Pro is emerging to be ahead of its competitors, as Microsoft’s plans for a mid-generation Xbox refresh remain unclear and we’re still months away from Nintendo’s 2025 launch of the Switch 2.
