Gamescom 2024 is currently underway, and as is the case every year with the event, a number of publishers have made announcements for what they have in the pipeline. For better or worse though, a fair number of these titles, and add-ons to existing ones, won’t materialise in the near future, as they have the 2025 year tagged to them instead.
At any rate, here’s what’s been announced either during, or alongside, the Opening Night Live of Gamescom 2024, in no particular order. It’s also not an exhaustive list, but of what’s been announced these are the ones that we have our eyes on.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – 11 February 2025
As the name suggests, this is the seventh entry of the long-running series of 4X games. This latest entry promises to let things get a bit wild, by unlocking political figures from their respective civilisations. This means you can have something as mad as Ben Franklin being a leader of, say, China.
If that’s the kind of twist you’ve been looking for in the 4X series, then you’re in luck, but there’s a bit of a wait, as you can imagine. While you have to wait until early next year to play it, the silver lining is that Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be available on virtually all platforms, including macOS and Nintendo Switch.
Mafia: The Old Country – 2025
There come a time in an ongoing series when it decided to do a prequel rather than moving the story forward, not that it’s necessarily a bad thing. And with Mafia: The Old Country, that’s what the series is doing for its next entry.
Set in Sicily of the 1900s, the developers at Hangar 13 say that this is the game that will let players “uncover the origins of organised crime with a gritty mob story”. Which sounds nice, but beyond a very wide 2025 release window – and its availability for the PS5, Xbox Series X and S, as well as PC via Steam, there’s not much else that’s known about the game.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – 9 December 2024 (Xbox, PC), Spring 2025 (PS5)
First mentioned all the way back in 2021, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle finally gets a release date. Though the arrangement is a bit weird thanks to the devs being MachineGames, a ZeniMax subsidiary which now falls under the Microsoft umbrella.
To break it down, Xbox and PC are getting the game as soon as 9 December if this year. The PS5, on the other hand, is only getting the game in spring of next year, which is a three-month wide waiting window.
Path of Exile 2 Early Access – 15 November 2024
Another game that has been first revealed a long time ago is Path of Exile 2, which has been announced as getting its early access on 15 November. It will be available on all platforms barring the Nintendo Switch, according to the announcement.
Though, being a free-to-play game in the first place, it remains to be seen what “early access” actually means in this context. We’ve reached out to a company rep and will let you know if we hear more.
Borderlands 4 – 2025
With the way the movie was received, it seemed like really awkward timing that Borderlands 4 got its announcement during Gamescom, but here we are. Judging from the lack of details that Gearbox Software has shared about the game though, it seems like it will still be quite a ways away. The vague and wide 2025 release window is certainly not helping either.
More specifically, the game’s release date will fall under publisher Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal year 2026, which removes the first three months of 2025 out of the equation. When it does launch, it will be available on the current generations of both PlayStation and Xbox, as well as PC through Steam and the EGS.
Street Fighter 6 DLC Terry Bogard – 24 September
While Capcom has put up a new trailer for Monster Hunter: Wilds, no new information in terms of its release date has been shared. Instead, it’s the next DLC for Street Fighter 6, Terry Bogard, that got one instead, which is the reason behind its inclusion in this list instead. And the date in question is 24 September.
Fighting game fans would not need any introduction to the character. But for those who need one, Terry first appeared in Fatal Fury in 1991, before also being a commonly recurring character in the King of Fighters series. Though it takes the character stepping out of an SNK-published game to be able to speak English properly. Just as it took Geese Howard being a guest character in Tekken 7, incidentally.
